How can I improve my use of Gradebook in OWL?

1. ENTER ALL MARKS IN GRADEBOOK AS ASSIGNMENTS ARE MARKED

Grades are not only a summative assessment of student work, but Vanderbilt University reminds us they are also about:

  • communicating about a student’s performance and potential for further success
  • motivating students to continue learning
  • providing feedback to instructors on their students’ learning, information that can inform future teaching decisions
  • providing students with feedback on their learning, clarifying for them what they understand and where they can improve

Students need to be able to see their marks on an on-going basis to reap the formative benefits of their assignments.

2. CREATE GRADEBOOK CATEGORIES

This enables students to better track their work and keep organized.

3. OTHER FUNCTIONS OF GRADEBOOK FOR INSTRUCTOR ORGANIZATION

A.  Using “Review Mode” during office hours can keep marks confidential.

B.Give students feedback in the assignment section and then it will also show up in the Gradebook.

C. If you would like to drop the highest or lowest mark in a category. Click the appropriate box.

D. Note: empty cells are excluded from calculation and not considered a 0. “Set zero score” will change them to a 0.

E. If you require more complex calculations than Gradebook can accommodate, then you will need to use a spreadsheet like EXCEL.  Go to ‘export’ and look at the ‘conventions used’ for how the spreadsheet needs to be imported back into Gradebook.
